How to Choose Healthy Dog Food

Written on June 23, 2011 by admin

Dogs are just like people in many ways, one of which being their need for a healthy balanced diet. Many people buy plain dog food that lacks nutritional value or is loaded with filler products like corn and soy rather than good food that will keep their pet healthy. Just like people, dogs need a diet of protein, vitamins, carbohydrates, minerals and fats to survive. As carnivores nature never intended them to eat a primarily grain-based menu, and as responsible pet owners it is our duty to ensure that our beloved friends get the nutrition that they need.

Canine nutrition is not as hard as it sounds, but it is more complicated than simply buying the bargain brand every week. To begin with, dogs need their food to be rotated every 2-6 months. This prevents them both from getting bored by their food, but also introduces new nutrients and formulas to their body to make up for the strengths and weaknesses of the previous brands. When selecting a brand for your pet make sure that the first ingredient listed is a meat, such as beef, chicken, lamb or turkey; that rice is the primary grain rather than corn or soy, and that vitamin E is used as the preservative. Only give your dog food that has been certified by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), and never feed them table scraps, which can often contain fatally toxic chemicals that are benign to humans.

There are a number of other factors to be considered as well, many of which are based upon the age, weight and lifestyle of your particular dog. This information can be learned by speaking to your vet or looking up demographic-specific information online
